EXERCISE #3
The upper system gives the rhythm on open-strings. The lower system is intended for use after the upper system has been confidently mastered. Do not play the two staves as a duet.
As in Exercise #2: The below example contains 8th note rests, make sure to observe the rest accurately. A rest, in this context, means silence. Mute the string by placing the next right hand finger to be used. Make a clear distinction between legato quarter notes and 8th notes.
Be sure to let tied notes sustain for their full value. When in doubt: the only time silence occurs is during rests.
Make sure to practise the upper line with the metronome until you’re comfortable with the rhythm.
