Four Fingered Exercises for the Left Hand

These exercises have two main functions:

1. To create a balanced left-hand technique focused on the 1st and 4th fingers.

2. To release pressure and reduce the “vice-grip” in the left hand. By constantly shifting you’ll have to be releasing your thumb pressure on a regular basis while still maintaining finger control. This is a very common technique in Pujol’s Guitar Method: Guitar School by Emilio Pujol Volume 2 A guitar method based on the principles of Francisco Tarrega

Practise Tips:

  • Keep your left hand thumb in the same position relative to your fingers. In other words, shift your thumb up with every position change.
  • Metronome it, keep a record of your speeds and build it up over 4 months.
  • Use a simple and relaxed i, m pattern with your right hand.
  • Try to keep your left-hand fingers down while you play each pattern.
